Over 100 jobs anticipated on a major UK nuclear decommissioning project. But where will the specialist engineering skills come from?
Another significant milestone for the UK’s nuclear sector.
Costain has officially taken control of the reactor buildings area at Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Station in North Wales, marking the next phase of a major decommissioning programme.
The project will involve reducing the height of two former reactor buildings, with more than 100 jobs anticipated at peak activity.
Initial works include electrical infrastructure, scaffolding and site preparation, with major lifting operations scheduled as the programme progresses.
But beyond the scale of the project, there’s a wider challenge worth considering.
Where will the specialist engineering workforce come from to deliver the UK’s growing pipeline of nuclear and critical infrastructure projects?
With substantial investment taking place across nuclear, defence, National Grid infrastructure and energy, many projects are competing for similar technical skills.
Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, EC&I specialists, Project Managers, Site Managers and experienced Supervisors will all have important roles to play.
And it’s not simply about technical qualifications.
Experience of working in highly regulated environments, understanding strict safety procedures and meeting project-specific compliance requirements can significantly narrow the available candidate pool.
At Apex M&E Solutions, we specialise in sourcing hard-to-find Mechanical and Electrical professionals for technically demanding projects, including power stations, substations and other critical infrastructure.
We believe identifying transferable skills and engaging with specialist engineering talent early will become increasingly important as these major programmes progress.
For those working across nuclear, energy and critical infrastructure — are you finding it increasingly difficult to secure experienced M&E personnel?
