OVERVIEW & ROLE DESCRIPTION

Overview

We are currently recruiting for a Maintenance Manager to join the Estates Department of this high profile University complex.

They are the largest single site University campus in the UK at 440 acres; it is located close to a market town and is only minutes away from the motorway network. Their Facilities have been voted the best in the UK for the last five years.

The Estate is in a sylvan setting, with a huge variety of academic, residential, commercial and sports facilities and is 362,000 sq. m in total. There are 154 buildings as well as a further 85 acres that is currently agricultural land adjoining campus that has planning permission for further development.

As the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of hard FM services across a large and complex estate. This is an exciting opportunity for a proven leader to manage a multi-trade maintenance team of 60 staff, ensuring the smooth operation of a diverse portfolio of buildings, including: Large teaching schools, World-class sports facilities, Research centres and specialist buildings, Student accommodation and commercial spaces.

They offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and professional development opportunities. This is a permanent position, paying £46,735 – £55,755 per annum, working 37 hours per week. You will receive 44 days annual leave inclusive of 8 bank holidays and 6 university closure days. This role also attracts a generous DC pension scheme with an employer’s contribution of 21%. Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Director of Maintenance, Engineering and Sustainability, the Maintenance Services Manager will provide lead and be directly responsible for overseeing and managing 60 staff responsible for the service delivery of all urgent, reactive and compliance maintenance necessary for the upkeep of the University Estate. To take responsibility for expenditure of c£5m on the maintenance budgets.
  • To oversee and manage day to day the Operational and Technical response teams, taking overall responsibility for all aspects of maintenance so that planned and reactive asset management, H&S, statutory compliance works are planned and delivered effectively.
  • Lead and develop a multi-disciplinary in-house team, ensuring high standards of reactive and planned maintenance.
  • Oversee M&E services, ensuring compliance with safety, legal, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage third-party contractors, ensuring cost-effective and efficient service delivery.
  • Drive a proactive approach to maintenance, problem-solving complex issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Support the university’s sustainability and estate strategy, enhancing building performance and efficiency.

 

Skills & Attributes

  • Relevant qualification in an Engineering, Facilities Management or Building Services Subject.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or willingness to undertake this.
  • Extensive experience in hard FM services within a large, complex environment.
  • Proven leadership of large, multi-trade maintenance teams.
  • Strong technical background in mechanical & electrical (M&E) services.
  • Expertise in contract management of third-party service providers.
  • A solid understanding of legal, compliance, and safety regulations in estate management.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive and hands-on approach.
  • Highly professional with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with project clients, customers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage multiple priorities within conflicting timescales.
  • A willingness to undertake future training as required.
